WELCA NEWS
January 12th Tuesday 9:30 AM Love Day
Bible Study Leader: LaVerne Mills
Hostess: Connie Teigen
Business Meeting
Would you be willing to help with providing food for luncheons after funerals at Lord of Love? We are having more funerals and need more workers with Circle of Concern. You will probably be called to bring one item of food about once or twice a year. The menu is sandwiches, potato chips, fruit or Jello salad and cake and cookies. This is a much-needed service and always appreciated by the bereaved family. Please contact LaVerne Mills 816-779-6188 or Linda Darr 816-763-3756, or just sign up on the list on the kiosk in the Narthex.
When saving Campbell Soup Labels, please save the entire label including Bar Code. Save Bar Codes only for Best Choice, for which we receive $30.00 plus a $30.00 bonus for first 1,000 each year.
BOOK CLUB
he Book Club selection for January is Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. “An atmospheric, gritty, and compelling novel of star-crossed lovers, set in the circus world circa 1932, by the bestselling author of Riding Lessons,” starring a mute heroine, Rosie the Elephant.

PASTOR’S PAGE
Bible Study is coming to LOL in 2010 and will be held continuously over the next several years. We are beginning the Book of Faith Initiative which is a program of the ELCA designed to increase Biblical knowledge in its members which results in increased faith and love. I encourage everyone to avail themselves of this opportunity to grow spiritually.
Too many of us have been afraid to participate in Bible studies because we either don’t want everyone else to know how little we know about the Bible or because we know people who seem to know much about the Bible and use that knowledge to oppress others. Neither of these concerns should be off-putting because no one knows as much about the Bible as they should and as Lutherans we believe that the Ultimate Purpose of the Bible is to reveal God’s love to God’s people so that we can respond in love to God and others. So, it’s all good!
So if you’re still sitting on the fence, take this as a double-dog-dare (and who can refuse that?) and come and see what God is doing in our midst.
Coming in February is the LOL Dinner Theater. We will put on a comedy based upon the book of Job but happening in present day Texas. It will be a hoot! This will be an excellent opportunity for you to invite your friends and family to an evening of fun and fellowship. Make sure to provide a special invitation to your un-churched friends so that they can come and see what fun we can have. If you promise them a good meal and a laugh they will come. The rest is the work of the Holy Spirit who does amazing things.
Love,
Pastor Newman
From the Bishop
The sun rises shortly before 7:00 a.m. these days, but dawn of the day comes much earlier, the first light shortly after 6:00 a.m. I have been to the office early enough in recent days to take in the early morning color of the dawn of a new day. My second story office window faces east, with a wonderful view of downtown Kansas City, Missouri. There are days when the colors of dawn are magnificent, other days when the cloud cover prevents seeing the dawn of a new day.
Shaping the Church for God’s Mission was the theme of the Bishop’s Convocation the first week of November. The theme was not meant to be an empty slogan or a passing phrase for a three day event. To be shaped by God is to be our prayer, our longing, our work of repentance and renewal. As you will hear in the coming months, Shaping the Church for God’s Mission will also be the theme of a major stewardship endeavor, a synod wide funding appeal authorized by the synod council, as we seek to order and align all the gifts God has given us for our faithful participation in God’s mission in the world. We intend this work to help shape the Church in its congregation, synod and churchwide ministries.
Advent begins November 29 with the prayer Come, Lord Jesus. Advent is a season requiring tri-focal eye wear. We look back in time to coming of Christ as the Word made flesh and his ministry among us. We look at this present time and Christ coming to us now in the Word proclaimed, in bread and wine and water, and in the Word made flesh in the witness and service of baptized men and women. We look to the future, the promised future, when Christ will come again and be all in all.
These are challenging days for the Church. We are feeling the effect of the economic downturn. Some are struggling mightily with the decisions made by the churchwide assembly in August. And there are other conflicts and struggles, as well as joys and opportunities and reasons for thanksgiving.
Advent is a time of prayer, of hopefulness when the signs around us may not be hopeful. It is a season of expectation and birthing of the new, when the signs around us may feel like sighs and groans unto death. Advent is the dawning of a new day, a living in the promise that Christ who came is with us today, in the midst of all that is on our plate, in the mess of life. Early morning clouds may keep us from seeing the deep, royal blue of the new day but the new day comes nevertheless.
As we read the texts for Advent and pray the prayers of the season, let us be so stirred in hope and filled with expectation that we are molded and shaped for God’s mission today.
Rev. Dr. Gerald Mansholt
