LOL Youth Group has become business entrepreneurs and we couldn’t be more excited! Monopoly Man, move over!
This week Caitlin (my daughter) sent me an email saying that I should go to kiva.org and check out their website. Kiva is a non-profit corporation that allows people to donate as little as $25 to be used as a loan for someone living in a developing country. Most of their loans are less than $1000 and are called micro-loans. This money is used by the borrowers to purchase supplies for a business, fertilizer for crops, farm machinery etc. The loan is paid back over a 12 month time frame.
The story goes that about 20 years ago there was a man living in Africa who would purchase a loaf of bread from a woman every day. Over a period of months he noticed that the woman was obviously living in extreme poverty. So one day he asked her why she didn’t bake more bread to sell. She replied that she just had enough money to bake three loaves a day, one for her family and two to sell. The man loaned her $20 so that she could buy more ingredients and bake more bread. This soon turned into a bakery as a thriving business. Thus began the micro-loan industry.
So, our youth group decided to invest $300 through Kiva, who will loan the money to twelve people ($25 each). This money will be pooled with other money to make the entire loan amount. Our plan is to reinvest this money into other loans as we are paid back by the loans we have made. So every month we should be able to finance another $25. God is so good! We will be pulling one family out of stupid poverty every month… ‘cause sometimes it just takes a bag of fertilizer.
I encourage all of you to go to Kiva.org and see what this amazing organization is doing. Then invest a little money or give to our youth group so that we can increase our portfolio. We are already blessing people in Peru, Bolivia, Tajikistan, Philippines, Senegal, Nicaragua, Cambodia, Lebanon, and Kenya. Only God can give life but he has entrusted us to give life dignity. Thank you, Jesus.
Love,
Pastor Newman
From the Bishop
Paul Manz and Jaroslav Vadja have given us a gem of a Christmas carol in
‘Peace Came to Earth’
Peace came to earth at last that chosen night
when angels clove the sky with song and light
and God embodied love and sheathed his might--
Who could but gasp: Immanuel!
Who could but sing: Immanuel!
By the time you read these words the cultural and commercial Christmas season will be over and the trees and decorations long gone. But as we enter the new year of 2010 and face the many challenges and issues before us, I pray the Christmas Gospel will continue bringing peace and hope to our lives. That God is with us, at work among us, is a sure and certain promise.
And who could be the same for having held
the infant in their arms and later felt
the wounded hands and side, all doubts dispelled--
Who could but sigh: Immanuel!
Who could but shout: Immanuel!
As we enter the new year I know we face significant challenges within the synod and in many of our congregations. Our life together has been tested by decisions at the 2009 churchwide. The economic downturn continues to impact mission support. And for many there are simply the daily personal struggles related to health or calling. The Gospel proclaims we are not left to ourselves, God is with us.
You show the Father none has ever seen
in flesh and blood you bore our griefs and pain.
In bread and wine you visit us again--
Who could but see: Immanuel!
Who could but thrill: Immanuel!
So we enter the new year encouraged in hope, renewed in love, and ready to work at those things God would have us to be about. Because of Immanuel: we can put away cynical attitudes and take on more Christ like outlooks. We tackle budgets and make critical choices, seeking to be shaped by the life giving power of the presence of Christ. And our hearts can sing and rejoice, and our hands extend in help and peace to one another.
How else could I have known you, O my God!
How else could I have loved you, O my God!
How else could I embrace you, O my God!
Who could but pray: Immanuel!
Who could but praise: Immanuel!
